BigCommerce offers a great way to create and manage coupons through the default Coupon manager system but as we all know that, no eCommerce is perfect for all kind of customers, BigCommerce coupon manager also sucks some time to cater a special need.
Last week, one of our customer came up with a question “We want to run a special promotion and create a coupon code for that promotion but we want to exclude some products from a discount coupon” and at first glance, we stuck as there is not anything in Coupon manager at BigCommerce that supports this request.
There is a way where we can include what products the particular coupon will discount but It’s a tedious process because you will have to select all products but the 50-60 products that you don’t want to be affected. It can become nightmare when you have a large inventory of 4500+ products.
There are few apps out there that claims to offer additional coupon features(Didn’t test them though) but our client does not want to go with app route as it’ll be a kind of additional recurring cost for them!
Then, we again though it and one of our team member came up with a brilliant solution. We presented the idea/solution to client and he was happy to do that. I was a simple and straight forward and could not take more than 15-20 mins to do that.
So what was it? Here you go:
- Create a hidden category
- Do a mass export
- Assign all the products you want to discount into that category via import.
- Create your coupon and have it only apply to products in that category.
With a large inventory, we were able to do it very quickly so If you only have a few products to exclude this would be super easy.
