The concept of responsive web design makes reference to the process of designing and developing websites that are able to react to user’s actions and detect the medium where the site is currently being watched in order to provide the best experience possible to the user in terms of navigability and readability. The theory behind responsive design involves the utilization of several grid and layout systems, image optimization and CSS media queries, therefore, no matter how many devices are released on the future, responsive websites will always be able to provide a proper response.

But responsive web design is not simply reducing font sizes and shrinking a picture to make it fit the new format. This concept requires a thoughtful process where the designers and developers work together to determine how to redistribute the elements according to resolution, which elements may be eliminated and how to maintain the concept while simplifying the structure.

Three key technical features are at the heart of responsive web design:

Media queries and media query listeners

A flexible grid-based layout that uses relative sizing

Flexible images and media, through dynamic resizing or CSS

Truly responsive web design requires all three features to be implemented.

The key point is adapting to the user’s needs and device capabilities. Suppose a mobile user will be viewing your site on a small screen. Taking the user’s needs into account doesn’t just mean adapting your content to the screen size. It also means thinking about what that mobile user will require first when visiting your site and then laying out the content accordingly. Maybe you’ll present the information in a different order. Don’t assume the user won’t need access to all the site information because she’s on a mobile device. You might need to change the fonts or interaction areas to respond better to a touch environment. All these factors influence responsive web design.

While mobile devices are changing the display landscape, with the appearance of more and more small screens, don’t forget what’s happening at the other end of the spectrum. Displays are also getting larger and larger. Having to serve both segments shouldn’t stop designers from being innovative on either.

Jumping on the responsive web design wagon isn’t something to take lightly. Take into account what you need to achieve, and consider whether catering to a specific version of a desktop or mobile device makes the most sense.

HTML and CSS standards are evolving to help web designers deal with these issues. It’s clear that some form of responsive web design will be used to meet the challenges, and it’s equally clear that standards will continue to evolve as better ways of handling the changing world of devices and browsers are discovered.

As secretive as Apple is about upcoming software and products, it’s tricky for any company to cover all of its tracks. When you’re one of the most watched and speculated about companies in the world, matters are only complicated. Sometimes the smallest thing can tip off the public about your plans.

Ars Technica this morning published some analysis of its latest traffic logs, pointing to the fact that it has received visits from iPads running iOS 6, and that those devices are located around Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif.

Apple took the wraps off iOS 5 at last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which it holds annually in San Francisco. For previous iterations of the software, the company held special events at its headquarters. The software typically comes out a few days ahead of new iPhones, which ship with it preinstalled.

Are employees at Apple already using the so-called iPad 3—possibly running iOS 6—to surf the web ahead of its expected announcement on March 7? We’re not sure, but the Ars magic 8-ball says “signs point to yes.”

Here is a screenshot of server logs pointing to iPads running iOS 6 from Ars Technica:

Apple is usually on top of the future far before anyone else even dreams of it, and such was certainly the case when the company unveiled the Siri app for the iPhone 4S. Siri is the first voice-activated “personal assistant” app available to consumers that serves as more than a novelty. Through it, users are able to ask specific questions covering a wide range of topics, to which Siri scours the web for answers. Everything from finding out the diameter of Neptune to the nearest vegetarian-friendly restaurant can be found by asking Siri.

That is, it can be found without using a search engine.

Current mobile web traffic trends combined with the relative minute use of Siri for searching means that the app is unlikely to divert a significant number of users away from search engines for the foreseeable future. But make no mistake about it, the current stasis of human search habits will change sooner than you think. Mobile web traffic is expected to increase by 400% by the middle of the decade. As more and more mobile-friendly online destinations make their homes in Digital Realty data centers and other remotely accessible networks, Siri will become more sophisticated and similar apps across varying smartphone operating systems will become more prevalent.

The elephant in the room for internet marketers is this: the ease of using personal assistant apps to conduct searches is apparent, and their eventual prevalence is absolute. Slowly but surely, people will start using search engines less and less and AI more and more when trying to find information. Thus, the singular obsession with search engine optimization will fizzle, as search engines themselves cease to be the only way in which people find information online. What then, is the future of Internet marketing?

The truth is that there’s no real way of knowing. But with that said, a few elements of a potential shift in focus from search engines to personal assistant apps are easy to peg: Pay-per-click campaigns will probably lose all their value due to a dramatic drop in online link clicking. Holding favorable online reviews and possessing high ratings will become an essential component for just about every business in operation. Local networking will once again become a top priority for any entity wishing to be found through a search that first and foremost zeros in on geography.

But it won’t be until Internet marketers have a clear understanding of the inner workings of personal assistant app software before new “Siri optimizing” strategies can be full implemented. Understanding how a particular app takes specific questions and creates specific answers will be critical when it comes to finding ways for businesses to be found through such services. More likely than not, this will be a defining objective of the latest generation of Internet marketers.

Web design is certainly an important tool from an aesthetic and functional perspective. It can bring together a site’s various mediums and intents across textual, video, and interactive platforms. It can program your site to respond quickly and easily to visitor prompts. It can insure that all content is delivered in an engaging and practical manner. And, of course, it can work to build a site that won’t require too much maintenance, editing, or java help in the future.

But web design can also have a strong marketing and SEO angle as well. After all, the way a site is designed may not matter much to long-time loyal readers who are well accustomed to its content – but it can certainly make or break the relationship when it comes to first-time visitors.

A first-time visitor likely arrives on a website for a singular and definitive purpose; usually, they come to view just one piece of content that drew their interest from another site. How can these visitors be compelled to stay longer? How can they become interested in the site’s other content? Turning these first-time visitors into regular visitors can translate into a tremendous boost for traffic and SEO. And a captivating web design can certainly help make this happen.

On that note, here are a few web design tips for capturing the first-time visitor:

-Keep a clean background. First-time visitors are more likely than most to get overwhelmed, so a web design cluttered with images and links may discourage them from clicking on anything. This applies most importantly to the top of the homepage.

-Images always help. Unless it’s completely irrelevant or inappropriate, a site can only benefit from having at least one image accompany every article. Make sure that this image is clear and that it conforms well with your background design.

-Make text skim-able. Studies show that most people have a habit of skimming written content that they find online, and this is even more likely the case when someone is a first-time visitor to a site. For this reason, it is important to design articles in a way that allows key content to pop out. This can be done by incorporating subheadings, carefully planning page breaks, showing large text quotes on the side, and by bolding key terms.

-Keep it consistent. A site may have many different uses, functions, and areas of focus. But a new visitor to a given site needs to see one consistent message upon arrival. This message should be conveyed in the layout, the color scheme, and – of course – in the pieces of content most prominently displayed on the main page. Less relevant content should always take a backseat.

These are just a few of the many ways that web design can be used to capture first-time visitors to a site. Since a new visitor will often form an opinion about a site in just a matter of seconds, it is important that every design approach keeps all details – both big and small – in consideration throughout the process.

If you’re on the verge of designing your first-time website for your first-time business, here’s a piece of advice that’s going to pay off exponentially through to the end of the decade: design your website with the mobile phone in mind. Experts estimate that mobile internet use is going to increase by 400 perfect by the year 2015. It doesn’t take months of analysis to conclude that if Joe Public is spending an extra four hours a week on his 4G Android phone then on his Sony Vaio four hours less than otherwise. That explosion in mobile traffic will mean the majority of web traffic itself will stem from those on mobile devices.

Traditional website design doesn’t compensate for the adjustments inherent with mobile web browsers. Components deemed ideal to draw desktop traffic don’t do much for attracting the attention of mobile users. Flash, for example, is notoriously cumbersome on mobile devices. Huge image files will stop the page from loading in enough time to satisfy user patience. Lots of pizazz simply serves as an inhibitor for organic mobile traffic.

Start off by sticking to standard layouts and conservative use of style. You want to make sure your website still looks appealing and contemporary, but even when it comes to standard desktop browsing too much glittery fluff can be a big turn off. Even if your business is energetic or the product or service itself is exciting hold off on making the atmosphere of your site the same. When given the choice between modesty and flashiness it always pays to cut back.

But the important thing is to design your website with external cascading style sheets with differing specifications for each and every browser visitors might be using. There are less than a dozen mainstream browsers including those for mobile devices. By doing so, you ensure that anybody accessing your website through these browsers is going to be able to receive every aspect of your website.
It’s an issue that’s going to affect more than just how people feel about your website. Google has already conceived of the ways in which mobile searches are to be separated from traditional searches. Essentially websites that don’t work well with a particular browser will receive a lower pagerank in searches performed through that browser. If your website fails to garner mobile traffic from the beginning, you could easily be digging the grave of your business.

It doesn’t take much besides a common sense understanding of what works for average mobile browsing. You can learn plenty just by browsing the web through your own smartphone and remembering which sites worked and which ones didn’t and for what reasons.
Either way, tomorrow’s market is going to be mobile whether or not your website is too.
